Alwars (‘Azhwars’ in Tamil), 12 in number, are considered to be the most elite saints (and also devotees) of lord Vishnu, who were highly instrumental in popularising Vaishnavism and also classical Tamil during the 6th to 9th centuries. Their religious works were compiled as ‘Nalayira Divya Prapandham’ consisting of 4000 hymns in Tamil. The shrines of the temples which they had mentioned in that text are categorized as Divya Desams which are totally 108.

  2. Boothathalwar - Sung hymns in 13 temples. He is the incarnation of Vishnu’s mace.
